acoustic and electric violin
After getting her degree in classical violin and chamber music at Belgium’s foremost school of music, the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, Françoise Derissen developed an increasingly keen interest in jazz. She began taking lessons with double-bass player Jean-Louis Rassinfosse at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, and then furthered her jazz studies with several intensive courses with first-class jazz violinists Jean-Pierre Catoul and Didier Lockwood. Since 1992, she regularly performs with jazz and jazz-rock bands Opium and Triosphère (with Cécile Broché and Antoine Cirri). With her own jazz project entitled There is an Effel there, she released a CD in 2007. Since then, Mrs. Derissen has been performing both nationally and internationally, playing her own compositions at various concerts and festivals (e.g. “Open jazz” in Louvain-La-Neuve in 2008, “Gaume jazz” in August 2008 and “Festival de musique européenne” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in November 2008).
Françoise is also a regular performer in many other genres and projects, and has appeared with Christian Merveille; Yann Tiersen; the Liège-based band Autour de Brassens; Vaches aztèques; Benoît Giaux’s Choraline, La Monnaie’s young people’s choir (for their show entitled “Le 20e siècle en chansons”;) and with vocalist Olivier Terwagne.
In jazz, she performs with the jazz manouche band “Jazzy Strings”, a trio (compositions and standards) with the guitarist Manu Bonetti and bassist Boris Schmidt, and in duo with the pianist Sabin Todorov, and bassist Marc Van Garsse.
Mrs. Derissen is in the process of recording a new solo CD featuring her own compositions. As a guest or session musician, she has played on many recordings, including those with Christian Merveille, Jean-Pierre Catoul, Einstürzende Neubauten, Daniel Romeo, Fabrice Alleman, Renaud Lhoest, etc.
Since 2001, Mrs. Derissen has taught at the Departement Conservatorium van de Hogeschool in Ghent. She also teaches jazz violin in Marchienne-au-Pont and at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, since 2006. Lastly, she is on the violin and viola faculty at the music school in Jumet-Lodelinsart in Belgium.
